Venice and Mestre lived in symbiosis for a long time. Venice is beautiful, and Mestre is a background of this beauty. It has another kind of beauty. The functional beauty of the industrial activity, beautiful usefulness, and uselessness. It’s a land of potentials, laboratory, where can be formulate the future of Venice and Mestre.

The main question of the workshop for us, what does it mean in the language of architecture. Generally, how can help the architecture solve the problem of operating brownfield areas, what are the tools for that? How can new life occupy a territory of the waste heritage land of modernity, the brownfield. To find the balance between technology, sustainability, space, time, and livable environment, new life of two cities, using the power dreams, imaginations, utopia matching against the existing reality.

The aim of the workshop is to analyse this situation and find solutions for revitalise Porto Marghera, the still existing and partly active industrial and port area, to turn it a good place for the future. We will try to develop a project of future industrial garden city (original concept of Marghera was a garden city) within the industrial area based on the tools of architecture and new technologies.

This is an experiment to find out the methodologies for each part of the territory, and to find out how it will work as a city. Mix together public places, existing industrial areas, public infrastructure, dwellings, agriculture, …

Each group has to find an existing architectural object or territory on the site and work with it. These projects has to coalesce, to grow up as a city, so the groups have to cooperate each other, to find a connection between the parts, or separate the parts. This will modelling how the cites grow. There is only one rule: the city has to be self sustainable in general level. This can be new grid for the city, not a visible, spatial grid like in Manhattan but an ideological and economical one.

Every group has to analyse the chosen site and functions in itself and in the generated context, and has to find the best solution using the advantages or the disadvantages of the given situation.

Da molto tempo, Venezia e Mestre vivono in simbiosi. Alla bellezza di Venezia fa da contrappunto quella di Mestre. È un altro genere di bellezza, quella “funzionale” dell’attività industriale, la bellezza insieme dell’utile e dell’inutile. È il regno del possibile, un laboratorio ottimale per immaginare un futuro possibile per Venezia e Mestre.

Il nostro principale interrogativo, durante il workshop, sarà: cosa implica questo dal punto di vista dell’architettura? In generale, come può l’architettura contribuire al problema dell’intervento sulle aree industriali dismesse, e attraverso quali strumenti? Come riportare in vita un luogo a tal punto contaminato dalle scorie che la società moderna ci ha lasciato in eredità? Occorre trovare un equilibrio fra tecnologia, sostenibilità, spazio, tempo e ambiente di vita che dia nuova linfa vitale alle due città, opponendo i sogni, l’immaginazione, le utopie alla realtà effettiva.

L’obiettivo del workshop è di analizzare questo contesto e proporre soluzioni per riqualificare Porto Marghera, l’area industriale e portuale ancora esistente e in parte attiva, nell’ottica di renderla un posto migliore per il futuro. Proveremo a progettare una futura città-giardino industriale (l’idea originaria di Marghera era quella di una città-giardino), radicata nel cuore dell’area industriale e operante attraverso i mezzi dell’architettura e delle nuove tecnologie.

Sarà un esperimento per scoprire metodologie da applicare in ogni parte del territorio, e come esso funzionerebbe se fosse una città. Ragionando al tempo stesso sul concetto di spazio pubblico, sul problema delle aree industriali dismesse, sulle infrastrutture pubbliche, le abitazioni, l’agricoltura…

Ciascun gruppo sceglierà una costruzione o un’area presenti sul territorio su cui intervenire. I singoli progetti dovranno fondersi, crescendo insieme come una città, per cui i gruppi dovranno collaborare, connettendo e separando fra loro le singole parti. Tale approccio simulerà il modo in cui crescono le città. Un unico vincolo: a livello generale, la città dovrà essere auto-sostenibile. Ciò configura una possibile “griglia” per la città, non una visibile e spaziale come quella di Manhattan, ma piuttosto ideologica ed economica.

I gruppi analizzeranno l’area o la funzione scelte nello specifico e in relazione al contesto circostante, cercando di giungere a una soluzione ottimale a partire dai vantaggi e dagli svantaggi propri della situazione.
